Message Well.. Here is how the scene was set:

It was late into the night when I decided for some reason that I needed to work on the BZF ad that features a monkey. You guys remember the Ad don't you? The one with the monkey covering his eyes on the first screen and then giving you a thumbs up on the second screen?

You know.. this little dude:

Since I had gotten some positive feed back on the Ad, I decided to "clean it up" a bit. I needed to change two things.. 1) The original ad had a URL for the site where it was originally created. That needed to go. 2) The background was a really nasty yellow. That needed to be changed to white to fit most the design of most web sites.

Step one went pretty well. I dropped the image into a gif animation program, grabbed the image I wanted to change and started clearing the logo. Five or so minutes later, the majority of Mr. Monkey had a clean white background. The only problem was the animated thumb was actually a series of images with each of them still containing that nasty yellow. To finish the job would require those to be cleaned up as well.

Feeling good about my progress, I decided to go ahead and finish the job.

After throwing the gif back into the animation software I found the small image that contained his little monkey thumb. Soo.. I grabbed that image and dropped it into my graphics application to clean it up. Seeing that it was a really small image, I zoomed it up to 1000 times its normal size. At that point I started hunting down the offending yellow color and painting them all white.

Seeing that I was in a deep state of concentration, I didn't happen to notice the faint sounds of my teen age daughter making her way down the hall towards my room.

With me sitting at my desk staring at my monitor intently she cracks opens the door and says, "Are you still up?"

"Yep", I replied (still deep in concentration.)

It was that very moment that this whole situation became very complitated.

She SLOWLY cracked opened the door a bit more and just stood there. She didn't open it all the way, and she didnt come into the room. She just stood there. Feeling her awkward stare piercing the back of my head like a laser, I turned to her and said, "Come on in".

After an awkward silence of about 3-4 seconds (still standing outside the slightly cracked door) she said..

"Ummm Dad.. Just what are you doing?"

At that point.. it all became clear.

I could now see the forest for the trees.

For you see, I had been sitting at my desk and staring at what I considered to be a "normal" image of a monkey finger that I was working to clean off all the yellow from so I could use it on a white background.

But to her.. this is all she saw:

At that point I said seven words that I never would have guessed would come out of my mouth..

"It is a monkey finger. I swear."

If I'm willing to share that kind of story with you guys.. Think about the fun you would have joining us for Branson Z Fest '05!
